What a great way to start the week! We have both been really excited about the new collection from Tiba and Marl for a while now and they have finally arrived. These bags have changed the way we travel with children and they have added a bit of style and luxury to packing every day baby essentials such as nappies and bottles, something I would never have thought possible. So to coincide with the launch of this awesome new collection we asked the lovely ladies behind this super cool brand if they would answer our Q&A so we could get to know a little more about them and their amazing brand. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did and I hope you go check out the new styles in this season’s collection! My (our) personal favourite is the new Geo Zig Zag print back pack but if I had my way I would probably have a quite a few of the styles (but I guess that would just be greedy) Happy reading happy week! Xx
What made you start …….?
Having children!!! I realised when I was on maternity leave with my first child Raf, that going back to work full time as a Buyer, and that being sent off on long haul Buying trips wasn’t going to be compatible with motherhood. Luckily Lydia was in a similar situation so this is when we decided to embark on a new venture together!
What were you doing before?
I was a Senior Bag Buyer for Topshop and before that the Accessories Buyer at Urban Outfitters..
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everywhere; family, friends, magazines, pinterest, Instagram, street style, catwalks, sports and scatterer. Amazing kids brands. Cool illustrators and graphic designers.
Where do you live with your family, and can you tell us a little bit about your set up?
Live in West London, with my husband James who is the Head of Graphics at French Connection. 3 year old Raf, 1 year old Miller and our cat Coco. Basically life resolves around the family and Tiba + Marl!!
How do you find being a working mother?
Would be easier with a bit more childcare!!! Lydia and I have only just got the little ones into nursery twice a week. Before that is was so f**king hard trying to build a business whilst constantly Mothering. Now we cram a ridiculous amount into 2 days, and many late nights. It’s hard but I need to keep reminding myself how hard it would be to work full time, and how much i would miss the boys if I did.
What is the hardest thing you’ ve found about being a mother?
Not having more support – we don’t have family near, or even a babysitter – so it’s been pretty full on the last 3 years!
How would you describe your own style?
Much more casual now I’m not in a Buying office – I used to always be in a pair of killer heels even when I was 9 months pregnant!! Now its more like a pair of Vans! I’ve recently had a few more nights out and have loved getting my pre-kids shoe collection back out, but can’t believe how much heels kill now! Day time I’ll typically be found in an Acne bomber jacket, one of my husbands t-shirts, and a pair of boyfriend jeans and a pair of nikes.
Who’ s your style icon?
Have loads – my friend Lucia always looks amazing, I’ve recently had to copy a pair of shoes my friend Eimear Varian Barry has as they were too nice not to buy. Eimear modelled for us when we launched – in fact all the beautiful Tiba + Marl models (Kelly from Cult of Youth, Eimear and Carrie from Mere Souer have incredible sense of style and they all inspire me).I love Chloe Sevignys style and have loads of stuff from the ranges she collabed on for Opening Ceremony. Can’t beat the Olsen twins style. Kate Bosworth always looks amazing. Fearne Cotton (a Tiba + Marl fan!!) has beautiful style
What is your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate (though I don’t feel that guilty), Grazia, Instagram, the Daily Mail app (I do feel guilty about that one), Topshop and Asos apps for instant shopping fixes!
When are you happiest?
At the weekends – when we are together as a family, when we go to the sea or to the cinema. Apart from that can’t beat a Mothers Meeting night out, supping cocktails with the Mama Crew.
Whats is next for …….?
New amazing prints (just wait till you see the AW prints!). A fierce metallic silver backpack. We have a exciting colab with a super illustrator coming up. New shapes, new products. Fun accessories like bag stickers and key rings. We have so many ideas that we have to restrain ourselves sometime!!!! Also a really exciting little colab with a clothing brand!!
What has been your proudest moment so far?
Our launch party – it was amazing. We organised it in two weeks, but it was like a wedding – it was just so great and so cool, and it was amazing that everyone came out to support us, and it just felt like the icing on the cake after 2 years of hard graft!! We still have to pinch ourselves that T+M is our brand, and are so happy at how successful we’ve been.
and finally….. What is your favourite piece from Hip Little People?
Too many pieces! We LOVE anything from Beau Loves. We definitely need to own a wildfire Teepee. And love the colours and prints from the Gardner and Gang collection.
